According to data provided by the Nordic electricity exchange, Nord Pool, the average electricity exchange price in January rose in all of the exchange’s price areas.

The price increase was largest in the Finland, Estonia, and Latvia price areas, where growth was between 15.9 and 16.5 per cent. The average price per megawatt-hour totalled 37.08 euros in Finland, 37.11 euros in Estonia, and 37.58 euros in Latvia. The Nord Pool system price was 32.93 euros in January, increasing 6.5 per cent compared to December.

There was a price difference between Estonia and Finland for 13 hours, and between Estonia and Latvia for 89 hours out of the month’s total number of hours.

Electricity power flows between Estonia and Finland were in the direction of Estonia for 54 per cent of the time, and in the direction of Finland for 35 per cent of the time. There was no trade between Estonia and Finland during 80 hours in the month, or almost 11 per cent of the time. The full transmission capacity available on the market was used for flows in the direction of Estonia almost 20 per cent of the time, and almost ten per cent of the time in the direction of Finland, while the full capacity was used for only eight per cent of the flow in the direction of Estonia.

Power flows between Estonia and Latvia moved in Latvia’s direction for 82 per cent of the time, with no trade taking place for six per cent, or 45 hours, of the month’s total hours. The full capacity available on the market was used for flows in Latvia’s direction for 94 hours.

Elering earned 306,650 euros in revenue in revenue from cross-border transmission capacity distribution in the first month of the year.

Carbon dioxide emission quota prices, which affect the production cost of electricity, were in the region of 7.62-9.42 euros per ton, an increase of around 0.55-1.25 euros per ton compared with the previous month.

Based on electricity futures prices on the NASDAQ OMX exchange, the average electricity price in Estonia may total 42.15 euros per megawatt-hour in February and 35.85 euros in March.
