In May, the price of electricity on the Nordic countries’ Nord Pool power exchange fell in all bidding areas besides the Baltics, where the price rose 0.3% compared to April in the Estonian bidding area to 42.32 euros per megawatt-hour, and 1.8 and 1.4 per cent in Latvia and Lithuania, respectively, to 44.28 and 44.11 euros per megawatt-hour.

In the Finnish bidding area, the price of electricity on the exchange last month was 39.84 euros per megawatt-hour, falling 3.9 per cent in a month. In the Estonian and Finnish bidding areas, there was a price difference in 78 of all of the hours last month. In the Estonia and Latvia bidding areas, there was a price difference in the case of 102 hours last month; and between Latvia and Lithuania, in the case of 11 hours.

The Nord Pool system price fell in April by 6.7 per cent to 38.07 euros per megawatt-hour.

The electricity capacity flows last month between Estonia and Finland moved in the direction of Estonia 91 per cent of the time, and 9 per cent of the time toward Finland. There was no trading between the countries in three hours. In the Estonia direction, 57 per cent of the capacity allocated to the market was used during the month, and capacity was used entirely during 66 hours.

Electricity streams between Estonia and Latvia flowed in the direction of Latvia 77 per cent of the time, and 15 per cent of the time toward Estonia. There was no trading during 55 hours. In the Latvia direction, 44 per cent of the capacity allocated to the market was used during the month, and capacity was used entirely during 102 hours.

Elering earned 1.6 million euros in revenue from the allocation of transmission capacity in May.

The price of carbon dioxide emission allowances, which impact the price of electricity, was between 24.39 and 26.82 euros per tonne past month. A month earlier, the price ranged between 21.82-27.45 euros per tonne.

Based on futures transactions on the Nasdaq OMX exchange, the average exchange price of electricity in June will likely be 39.10 euros per megawatt-hour in the Estonian bidding area, 39.45 euros per megawatt-hour in Finland and 37.98 euros per megawatt-hour in Latvia.
