More Electricity was Produced than was Consumed in the Baltic States in April

A total of 779 GWh of electricity was produced in Estonia in April of this year, 3% more than in the same period last year. Domestic electricity production surpassed consumption by around 22%.

The totals for the month were similar to those of April last year at 636 GWh, despite the slightly warmer average temperatures this year.

Total energy consumption in the Baltic states in April was 1959 GWh, which was about the same as a year previously. Total production in the Baltic states in April was 1971 GWh, which meant there was a positive overall balance, as in April of the previous year.

In April, electricity production exceeded domestic demand in both Estonia and Latvia, as Latvian electricity production in April was 48% higher than in March because of high water, but it was still 2% down on production in the same month of the previous year. Lithuania had a shortfall in April of 546 GWh, and this meant the shortfall had risen by 8% from a year earlier. Lithuania had to cover 69% of its consumption through imports, most of which were evenly divided between Latvia and Russia.
Exports of electricity from Estonia rose 12% from a year before, and totalled 402 GWh, of which 61% went to Finland.

However, total imports in April were 273 GWh, of which 90% came from Latvia, 9% from Lithuania and 1% from Finland.
