According to the Nord Pool Nordic electricity exchange, the electricity price in the Estonian price area decreased by 12 percent last month, reaching 39.88 euros per megawatt-hour.

Compared to March, the prices decreased in all Nord Pool areas, but in Finland the electricity exchange price was 33 cents higher than in Estonia and in Latvia it was 15 cents higher than in Estonia, i.e. accordingly 40.21 and 40.03 euros per megawatt-hour. In April the price differences between Estonia and Finland occurred for 38 hours and between Estonia and Latvia for 42 hours. The Nord Pool system price decreased by 10 percent in April and reached 39 euros per megawatt-hour.

Capacity flows in April went 66 percent of the time in the direction of Finland and 20 percent in the direction of Estonia. There was no trading for 14 percent of the time, i.e. 104 hours. During April slightly over one fourth of the capacity provided to the market was used in the direction of Finland and about 7 percent in the direction of Estonia. The capacity provided to the market was used fully in the direction of Finland only for 60 hours.

Capacity flows in April went 73 percent of the time in the direction of Latvia and 17 percent in the direction of Estonia. 39 percent of the capacity provided to the market was used in the direction of Latvia and 7 percent in the direction of Estonia. The capacity provided to the market was used fully in the direction of Latvia for 43 hours and in the direction of Estonia for 8 hours.

The carbon dioxide emission quota price range affecting the production cost of electricity has demonstrated growth over the last year. In April that price range was 12.61-13.95 euros per ton while in March it had been 9.97-13.65 euros per ton.

Based on electricity futures prices on the month’s final day of trading on the NASDAQ OMX exchange, the average electricity exchange price in Estonia may total 36.85 euros per megawatt-hour in May and 39.25 euros per megawatt-hour in June.
